Mr. Men
Name | Image | Official description |
---|---|---|
Mr. Tickle | If somebody is feeling sad. If somebody is feeling mad. If somebody is feeling bad .... then that somebody needs a tickle. And who better to do it than Mr. Tickle! | |
Mr. Happy | Everything is just "Wonderful!" to Mr. Happy. Always with a smile on his face, a hungry lion could attack and Mr. Happy would still find the positive in the situation. | |
Mr. Nosey (spelled as "Mr. Nosy" in the US version) | Mr. Nosey is a loveable lump who innocently pokes his nose into other people's business in the nicest way possible, and his BFF (best friend forever) is Mr. Small. | |
Mr. Bump | Mr. Bump is the most accident-prone man in Dillydale, who buys bandages in bulk and is an emergency room regular, and lives next door to his sister, Little Miss Whoops. | |
Mr. Messy | From his house to his hair, Mr. Messy's life is an unorganised messy muddle. But Mr. Messy doesn't think he is messy, he just thinks everyone else in Dillydale is far too tidy. | |
Mr. Small | Mr. Small is so teeny tiny he is often overlooked, but he has a big booming voice and always offers a kind word or tip of his very tall top hat to passing strangers. | |
Mr. Nervous | Oh poor Mr. Nervous, he's a shaky ball of nerves who spends his day worrying his worst fears will come true, because unfortunately for him, they usually do. | |
Mr. Noisy | Mr. Noisy can't do anything quietly. His walk is a stomp, his talking voice more resembles a footy match shout and his drum playing could wake a hibernating grizzly bear. | |
Mr. Lazy | Mr. Lazy has a collection of gadgets that are made to make his life as easy and lazy as possible, mainly from the comfort of his favourite place, the couch. | |
Mr. Funny | Mr. Funny DOES NOT SPEAK! The clown about town expresses his comedic conduct in silence - oh, except for the handheld horn he communicates with, Honk! | |
Mr. Fussy | Mr. Fussy is the fussiest person in Dillydale, but unfortunately he expects everyone to follow in his oh-so-perfect footsteps, and is left disappointed when they don't. | |
Mr. Bounce | While being able to bounce about looks like a lot of fun, not being able to keep two feet on the ground often causes Mr. Bounce all sorts of problems. | |
Mr. Strong | Mr. Strong is a sweet and kind muscle man, who is always wiling to lend his super strength to help those in need, and has nicknames for his favourite arm muscles. | |
Mr. Grumpy | Mr. Grumpy is always grumbling, complaining or muttering, and often finds himself involved in jobs better suited to a happier chap, which just makes him grumpier. | |
Mr. Quiet | Mr. Quiet likes things peaceful and pleasant on the ears, but finds himself in the middle of sticky situations that ideally require him to shout his way out of, if only he could. | |
Mr. Tall | With his deep, deep voice from way up above, this gentle giant is so sweet and loveable you'll want to give him a big cuddle; if only you could reach that high! | |
Mr. Rude | While most people choose their words carefully, not wanting to offend others, Mr. Rude is unable to hold anything back, including his many insults! | |
Mr. Scatterbrain | Mr. Scatterbrain can't have a normal conversation, his mind races in a thousand confusing directions, and he always remembers his tasks a little too late. | |
Mr. Stubborn | Mr. Stubborn does not like listening to other people's opinion or suggestions, insists on doing this his way or no way, and is far too stubborn to ever admit he's wrong. |
Little Misses
NOTE: All the Little Misses are referred on-screen without the prefix 'Little'.
Name | Image | Official description |
---|---|---|
Little Miss Bossy | Whoa! If you don't like being told what to do, then back away slowly when Miss Bossy is about. And don't ever offer her a "no" for an answer; she won't take it! | |
Little Miss Naughty | Always playful and never mean, Miss Naughty is Dillydale's number one prankster and loves playing tricks on her favourite target, Mr. Nervous. | |
Little Miss Sunshine | Miss Sunshine wakes up cheery every morning with a song in her heart and a smile on her face, and co-hosts a popular morning talk show with Mr. Happy. | |
Little Miss Helpful | Miss Helpful always wants to help. She's always first on the scene to start the problem solving, however her problem solving usually creates more problems than it solves! | |
Little Miss Magic | She pops up in places with a magical POOF! With a wave of her wand and a rhyming spell, this Little Miss's magic often turns into mishap. | |
Little Miss Giggles | With the most infectious laugh in Dillydale, Miss Giggles would find a pea on a plate funny and finds herself innocently LOLing at the most inappropriate times. | |
Little Miss Chatterbox | Miss Chatterbox loves to talk. And talk. She believes she's an expert on everything, convinced that everyone in Dillydale wants to hear about it. Even if they don't. | |
Little Miss Curious | Definition of curious: disirous of learning or knowing: inquisitive. Yep, that paints the perfect picture of this constant-question-asking Little Miss! | |
Little Miss Scary | Miss Scary takes great pleasure in scaring the innocent folk of Dillydale and spends much of her time creating spooky experiments, that never seem to end well. | |
Little Miss Whoops | Watch out if the careless and clumsy Miss Whoops comes your way. She loves to help, but is a walking disaster who's unaware of the chaos she leaves in her path. | |
Little Miss Calamity | A proverbial black cloud of misfortune hangs over Miss Calamity, which she takes in her stride. Just when it looks like things are starting to go her way, another terrible disaster befalls her. Oddly, she is always suprised by the calamity despite obvious warning signs. | |
Little Miss Daredevil | She's sporty, fearless and often a menace to the safety of Dillydale. When Miss Daredevil takes a risk, she rarely does it without dragging her friends along with her. |

Episodes
Production
Eryk Casemiro in the early 90's wanted to do a sketch-comedy adaption of the Mr. Men series with Broadway Video, but they weren't able to agree with the Hargreaves family, but Marina Productions would later make their own adaption, Mr. Men and Little Miss. In 2004, Christine Hargreaves sold the franchise to Chorion. Eryk was asked by Diana Manson, executive producer at Chorion, if he wanted to work on a new Mr. Men show, to which he agreed. The show would become a number-one priority for them, pre-production of the show began and the show was eventually announced at MIP Jr. in October of 2006 and started writing the next month. They then pitched the show to Cartoon Network in 2007, to which they showed interest, but did not accept at the time due to the Boston Bomb Scare earlier that year. Nick Wilson also wanted the show on Channel Five's Milkshake! block. Cartoon Network later picked it up in March.
It proved a challenge to make the show for both an American and British audience, since the demographic in the UK was slightly younger, this led to some of the show's dialogue being toned down, while the crew still had to keep it funny for an older audience. There was also a challenge for them when it came to appealing to the series' native British audience, Eryk stated, "Britain was our tricky audience. Mr. Men is so beloved over there; the only thing to compare it to in the U.S. is Peanuts. Ninety percent of British people between 18 and 35 know and love the characters, versus 18 percent in the U.S. The production blog on our website was getting hits early on: 'Why did you change their design,' 'Why did you have toโฆ ' Even some feminists were saying, '"Little Miss" is troubling, why do you have to call them that?' Well, it's the heritage of the show! But once it started airing, the fuss died down and we were well received."
Cartoon Network also asked for the show to appeal more to male audiences, specifically asking for more "boy-centric" humor and asking them to remove some of the female characters, specifically Little Miss Twins, Little Miss Fickle and a supposedly new character called Little Miss Fabulous. This was all because they were afraid the show would turn off male audiences. The crew had also wanted the female characters to be more positive, so they changed the genders of Little Miss Scatterbrain and Little Miss Stubborn and created Mr. Scatterbrain and Mr. Stubborn.
Unlike many other shows of the time, the series is in a sketch-comedy format instead of a narrative-driven one. Eryk stated "The format is really to serve the characters. Mr. Men isn't like most shows, where there's a narrative and the character goes through some kind of transformative experience. If Mr. Stubborn learns not to be stubborn, he no longer serves his purpose in the book." It was also a risk for them to make a pre-school show where characters won't ever learn anything, "We use the sketch comedy model to sell the characters' benevolence towards each other. Even though they know Mr. Persnickety will be a pill, or Little Miss Daredevil will be the most frightening bus driver alive, they still care for one another and accept each other for who they are in every sketch. There's this sort of underlying brother- and sisterhood. The early notes we got from the network asked, why would Mr. Grumpy take a car ride with Miss Sunshine? He would because he's Mr. Grumpy, but it would never stop him from being grumpy the entire ride. The rub of the sketch is that that character never wins in the end -- whoever is bristling everyone, it always rolls back down on them. Without them 'learning a lesson,' we show that their behavior is not really acceptable."
Voice-recording started in April 2007 and production was speedy. They had Renegade Animation animate the show, "We were introduced to them back when we worked at Klasky-Csupo," Casemiro explains. "They were a great team to work with. Peter Michail was a stupendous art director and character designer. He found a way to make Flash super-effective as a production model and a creative tool."
According to Peter Rida Michail, Chorion wanted to give the show a modernized look without it straying too far from the original designs. The people at Renegade Animation noted that the backgrounds for the original books were simple plain colors. They wanted to try something different for the backgrounds, but thought the book-style of them wouldn't translate too well in-motion, so they experimented for around a month or two, before deciding to use textured-color backgrounds, as they thought the characters would pop-off the screen a lot better with them. They also redesigned many characters to befit the 70's-themed art style of the show, which was styled after Laugh-In and the work of UPA. The 70's theme influenced other aspects of the show, such as the songs and various set-pieces.
When the design department received completed storyboards from the directors, they would go through the boards and pick-out key backgrounds to be made, making different versions of it for different scenes. After making the key background, it would go onto the animation department.
Production for the first season finished sometime in December. "It was a stupidly fast schedule... a head-spinning schedule," Casemiro recalled. "But it was a labor of love -- we had a great time."
Not as much is known about season 2's production, but it is known writing started around April of 2008 and the series was renewed in November of that year. Before the season began production, Mark Risley, Eryk Casemiro, Kate Boutilier, Sarah Rudolph Payan, Adam Idelson, Jan Stebbins and Ashley Postelwaite met up and hashed out the first season discussing things such as characters, character pairings, the geography of Dillydale, characters to introduce in season 2 and episodic themes. They kept fan feedback through the discussion and also had a child test audience for feedback. The season was announced in January 2009. Writing is said to have finished in December that year.
It is also known Chorion didn't like Little Miss Calamity and Mr. Per(s)nickety, so they had the former character removed and the latter renamed and recolored to look more like his book counterpart.

Trivia
- This is the first animated appearance of characters created by Adam Hargreaves, in this case, Mr. Rude, Little Miss Scary, and Little Miss Whoops.
- This was the second Mr. Men related series to not have been produced in its country of origin, as it was produced by Chorion and Renegade in America and then dubbed with British actors. The first was Mr. Men and Little Miss, which was produced in France and dubbed over with British and later Canadian actors.
- The show was originally going to premiere on Thursday, October 5th 2007 and its timeslot was 4pm EST, but was pushed back for reasons unknown maybe due to production was still made. Its timeslot would eventually become 9am EST.
- Among the show's influences were:
- Laugh In
- Monty Python
- Saturday Night Live
- Tom and Jerry
- Laurel and Hardy
- Little Brittan
- YouTube
- Looney Tunes
- The Marx Brothers
- The Three Stooges
- Flower Power
- Buster Keaton
- Two of the show's characters, Little Miss Calamity and Little Miss Daredevil, were created exclusively for the television series.
- The former character, however, only appeared in the first season, as the production company of the show, Chorion, for an unknown reason, didn't like her.[1]
- Little Miss Scatterbrain and Little Miss Stubborn have had their genders reassigned to become Mr. Scatterbrain and Mr. Stubborn due to the fact that the writers wanted the female characters to remain mostly positive.[2]
- None of the character's catchphrases (except for Mr. Noisy's and Little Miss Whoops') are lines from their original books.
- The entire show uses the Ed Interlock font. The opening and closing credits use Ed Gothic.
- The show's simplistic art style was inspired by UPA animation.[3][4]
- There is a live show that has been held in some countries including Singapore, as seen here.
- This show was one of the only shows on Milkshake in the UK not to be affected by Viacom's takeover of Channel 5 in 2014, with others including Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom.
- Little Miss Twins and Little Miss Fickle were planned to be in the series, but they didnโt appear because Cartoon Network did not want too many female characters as to not turn off male audiences. Also, a character named Little Miss Fabulous was considered being created for the series before the books' Little Miss Fabulous was created in 2016. Oddly enough, it is stated that Miss Twins and Miss Fickle were made for the show, when they weren't. [5]
- It's also possible they may have considered adding Mr. Chatterbox, Mr. Slow and Mr. Daydream, considering Renegade Animation is known to own their books. [6]
- Little Miss Fun appeared as a character in several pieces of official merchandise looking relatively the same, but she was unused in the series itself. Mark Risley confirmed that she wasn't meant to be a character. This design was most likely used as a placeholder to replace Little Miss Calamity on character listings in official merchandise, though there exists a serving tray which features both Little Miss Calamity and the unused Little Miss Fun design.
- This was the final Mr. Men television series until the announcement of one being produced in 2021.
Notes
- In both Arabic versions, the scenes where Mr. Rude farts are edited or cut out due to them being too inappropriate to view, with farting being considered taboo in the Arab world.
- Season 1 has a very confusing listing on their YouTube channel.
- There is no listing of an episode 38.
- Gardens and Dillydale Day are both listed as S1 E28.
- Gardens should have been episode 38, but was mis-listed.
- Bad Weather is listed as Season 1 E51 while it is Season 2 E51.
- Only 3 episodes; Food, Sightseeing and The Dark are numbered correctly on the official YouTube channel.
- Most of Season 2 is listed correctly, but incomplete
- Bad Weather is mistakenly listed as a Season 1 episode.
- Pests is not uploaded at all, nor is there a listing for its number
Reception
Animation Magazine wrote, "using a sketch comedy format and more than 25 main characters, the new Mr. Men Show boldly goes where few other preschool toons have dared to roam!" The Daily Mail thought "with a slightly surreal edge, [the show is] whackierโ and far funnier โthan most other childrenโs shows". The Hollywood Reporter said, "Episodes pick up where Hargreavesโ pages left off...while the animation is imaginative and lively, the best part is the showโs savvy sense of humor...The Mr. Men Show will touch everyone who tunes in".
The series has become a cult classic in recent years, and is praised for its characters, humor, art, animation style and music.
Some fans of the original books hate the show for being unfaithful to the books, its cartoony, wackier tone, the Americanized setting and the redesigns of certain characters. However, other fans, especially in the United States where the original books aren't as well-known, generally like the show, this may be because it introduced the Mr. Men franchise to them or because they don't mind the changes and see the show as good in its own right.
