Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (talking incoherently)
Narrator (overlap): He used to talk to anybody and everybody, about anything and everything! Going on, and on, and on. And on, and on, and on. And on, and on, and on.
Mr. Chatterbox: (talking incoherently)
(The scene transitions to Mr. Chatterbox standing in front of a worm's hole)
Narrator: And when he didn't have anybody else to talk to, he used to talk to himself.
(A worm pops out of the hole)
Mr. Chatterbox: Morning, Mr. Chatterbox.
Narrator: He said to himself.
Mr. Chatterbox: Morning to you.
Narrator: He replied to himself.
Mr. Chatterbox: Nice day, isn't it?
(The worm frowns)
Mr. Chatterbox: Yes, it is for the time of the year.
(The scene transitions to nighttime and Mr. Chatterbox is still talking by the worm's hole)
Mr. Chatterbox: (talking incoherently)
(The worm goes back into their hole)
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (talking incoherently)
Narrator (overlap): And so on, and so on, and on, and on.
Mr. Chatterbox: (talking incoherently)
(The scene transitions to daytime and Mr. Chatterbox is still talking by the worm's hole)
Mr. Chatterbox: (talking incoherently)
(The worm comes back out of the hole)
Mr. Chatterbox: (talking incoherently)
(The worm frowns upon seeing that Mr. Chatterbox is still there talking)
Mr. Chatterbox: (talking incoherently)
(The scene transitions to a box-shaped house. The camera zooms out from the house)
Narrator: He lived in a box-shaped house in a village.
(The camera keeps zooming out)
Narrator: Chatterbox Cottage.
(The camera stops zooming out. The scene transitions to the morning outside Chatterbox Cottage. Mr. Chatterbox (without his hat on), is shown receiving his mail from the postman)
Narrator: One morning, the postman arrived with a letter for him.
Postman: Morning, Mr. Chatterbox.
Narrator: Said the postman.
Mr. Chatterbox: Oh, good morning to you, Postman.
Narrator: Replied Mr. Chatterbox.
Mr. Chatterbox: Although, as I was saying to myself only yesterday, or was it the day before, I forget. However, it's not quite so good a morning, in my opinion. But I might be wrong. Although, I'm not very often, as it was the other day, Monday, I think it was, or perhaps it was Tuesday, but never mind, because it is quite a good morning. Don't you agree? Yes, of course you do. Because that what you said to me in the first place, and...
(Mr. Chatterbox continues talking but the talking becomes impossible to tell what the words on. The camera zooms in on the postman)
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (talking incoherently)
Narrator (overlap): And he went on and on and on, all the morning.
(The postman becomes more irate as the camera zooms in closer to him)
Narrator: And the poor postman was late delivering all his letters.
(The scene transitions to the inside of the hat shop in the afternoon. Mr. Chatterbox is shown talking to Mr. Bowler, the owner of the hat shop)
Narrator: That afternoon, Mr. Chatterbox went into the hat shop in the village.
Mr. Chatterbox: Hello, Mr. Bowler.
Narrator: He said to the man who owned the hat shop.
Mr. Chatterbox: Do you think, if it’s possible, that I could buy, if it's not too expensive, but I'm sure it will be, a new hat, because, would you believe it, yes of course you would, but anyway, as I saying, my present hat, the one of my head, as you can see, is getting, how can I put it?
(Mr. Bowler frowns)
Mr. Chatterbox: A little too old, because I've had it for, oh, let me see now,
(Mr. Bowler smiles)
Mr. Chatterbox: It must be, let’s think, ten years?
(The camera zooms in on Mr. Chatterbox)
Mr. Chatterbox: No, no, no, no! I tell a lie, it can't be that long, or can it? Well, yes it could be, but on the other hand...
(The camera cuts outside the hat show and silhouettes of Mr. Chatterbox and Mr. Bowler can be seen in the shop window. The camera zooms out from the window)
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (talking incoherently)
Narrator (overlap): And he went on and on all the afternoon and half the night!
(The camera stops zooming out)
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (talking incoherently)
Narrator (overlap): Long after poor Mr. Bowler,
(The screen darkens to show that night has fallen)
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (talking incoherently)
Narrator (overlap): Should have shut up shop and gone home.
(The camera zooms in on the window of the hat shop where the viewers can see Mr. Bowler talking inaudibly to Mr. Chatterbox)
Narrator: Eventually, when Mr. Bowler managed to get a word in edgeways, or was it sideways?
(As Mr. Bowler and Mr. Chatterbox shake hands, the camera pans to the right)
Narrator: He promised to order a new hat for Mr. Chatterbox.
(The camera zooms out from the shop door to show Mr. Chatterbox and Mr. Bowler going home in opposite directions)
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (incoherent talking)
Narrator (overlap): Then he pushed Mr. Chatterbox out of his shop, still talking, of course.
(The scene transitions to Mr. Bowler sitting down at the supper table eating a plate of sausages, potatoes, and peas. Mr. Bowler is currently chewing on a sausage)
Narrator: And went home for his supper. Which was cold, of course. Because Mrs. Bowler cooked it,
(The camera zooms in towards Mr. Bowler as he continues chewing)
Narrator: For him hours ago.
(The camera stops zooming in)
Narrator: And while he ate,
(The screen fades to black)
Narrator: He thought.
(The scene transitions to Mr. Bowler's hat shop one week later. The postman is shown delivering an orange hat box to Mr. Bowler. The camera is zoomed in towards the hat box)
Narrator: Exactly,
(The camera zooms out to show Mr. Bowler and the postman in the same frame)
Narrator: One week later, the new hat for Mr. Chatterbox arrived.
(The camera stops zooming out
Narrator: The postman delivered it to Mr. Bowler's shop.
(Mr. Bowler takes the box from the postman)
Mr. Bowler: Ah! At last!
Narrator: Said Mr. Bowler heaving a sigh of relief.
Mr. Bowler: I think this hat is going to be the answer to the problem of Mr. Chatterbox talking so much.
Postman: Oh, I wish it could be.
Narrator: Said the postman.
Postman: How can it?
Mr. Bowler: Because,
Narrator: Replied Mr. Bowler
(The camera zooms in on Mr. Bowler)
Mr. Bowler: This hat is a magic hat.
(The camera pans to the postman)
Postman: Oh.
Narrator: Replied the postman, who didn't quite understand.
(The scene transitions to Mr. Bowler delivering the hat to Mr. Chatterbox. Mr. Chatterbox is shown on the doorstep of Chatterbox Cottage. The camera is zoomed in on Mr. Chatterbox. The camera then starts zooming out to show Mr. Bowler holding the hat box in the frame as well)
Narrator: That same afternoon, Mr. Bowler took the new hat 'round to Chatterbox Cottage.
(The camera stops zooming out)
Mr. Chatterbox: Oh goody!
Narrator: Said Mr. Chatterbox, seizing the hat box and opening it.
(Mr. Chatterbox opens the hat box to reveal an orange hat inside the box. The camera zooms in on the orange hat then cuts back to Mr. Chatterbox holding the hat box in front of Mr. Bowler)
Mr. Chatterbox: It's my new hat! My lovely new hat! Oh, I couldn't wait for it to arrive. In fact, I got up early this morning, because, heh. Aren't I silly? I just knew, I don't know how, but I really knew that, oh, that today would be the day.
(The camera zooms in closer to Mr. Chatterbox so Mr. Bowler's no longer in the frame)
Mr. Chatterbox: I don't know how I knew, but I knew.
(The camera zooms in even closer to Mr. Chatterbox)
Mr. Chatterbox: And it is. And here is my hat, and oh (chuckles)
(The camera zooms in even closer to Mr. Chatterbox but angles it to show Mr. Chatterbox looking at the upper right corner of the screen)
Mr. Chatterbox: Isn't it beautiful?
(The camera zooms in even closer to Mr. Chatterbox but angles it to show Mr. Chatterbox looking at the bottom right corner of the screen)
Mr. Chatterbox: I can't wait to try it on, oh, I do hope it suits me, do you thing it will?
(The camera zooms back out slightly and straightens itself back to it's proper position)
Mr. Chatterbox: Well, of course you do, and uh-
(The camera pans to the right over to Mr. Bowler)
Mr. Bowler: Why don't you try it on?
Narrator: Said Mr. Bowler.
(The camera zooms out to show Mr. Bowler and Mr. Chatterbox in the same frame)
Narrator: Grinning.
(The camera stops zooming out)
Mr. Chatterbox: Try it on? (stutters) Yes! Yes, of course I must try it on. Heh. How silly of me to stand here chattering.
(The camera zooms in closer to Mr. Chatterbox so Mr. Bowler's no longer in the frame)
Mr. Chatterbox: When I haven't tried it on yet. Yes. Yes.
(The camera zooms in even closer to Mr. Chatterbox)
Mr. Chatterbox: I will, absolutely, definitely, try it on straight away.
(The camera zooms in even closer to Mr. Chatterbox)
Mr. Chatterbox: Uh, (stammers) because, as I said, it's silly just to talk about trying it on, and then not try it on, isn't it?
(The camera zooms in even closer to Mr. Chatterbox to the point where the camera blurs)
Mr. Chatterbox: And so...
(The camera zooms back out to show Mr. Bowler and Mr. Chatterbox in the same frame. Mr. Chatterbox takes the orange hat out of the hat box)
Narrator: He took the hat out of the box,
(Mr. Chatterbox, who wasn't wearing a hat to begin with, puts the hat on his head)
Narrator: And put it on.
(Mr. Chatterbox waves his arms up and down happily)
Narrator: It was a beautiful hat.
(The camera zooms in closer to Mr. Chatterbox so Mr. Bowler's no longer in the frame)
Mr. Chatterbox: I say, sir. I must say, yes I really must, that this hat, is, yes, it really is, to say the least, one of the best hats that I have ever seen in my life! And in my life, I must say, I have seen some hats. Trilbies, bowlers, deerstalkers,
(The camera zooms out to show Mr. Bowler in the same frame as Mr. Chatterbox)
Mr. Chatterbox: Balmorals, fedoras, homburgs, operas, toppers, toque...
Narrator (overlap): But while he was talking, a funny thing was happening.
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (incoherent talking)
(Mr. Chatterbox's hat starts to grow)
Narrator (overlap): The more words that came out of Mr. Chatterbox's mouth, the larger his hat became.
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (incoherent talking)
(Mr. Chatterbox's hat grows some more)
Narrator (overlap): The more Mr. Chatterbox talked, the more the hat grew.
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (incoherent talking)
(The hat grows over Mr. Chatterbox's eyes)
Narrator: And grew.
(The hat grows over Mr. Chatterbox's shoulders)
Narrator: Mr. Chatterbox kept on talking, and the hat kept growing.
(The hat grows over Mr. Chatterbox's mouth)
Mr. Chatterbox: I can't see anything.
Narrator: He said.
(The hat grows down to Mr. Chatterbox's hands. His arms are also trapped in the hat)
Mr. Chatterbox: One minute I was standing here looking at my new hat in the mirror,
(The hat grows down to Mr. Chatterbox's feet)
Mr. Chatterbox: And now, all of a sudden, without any warning, taking me all unawares, just like that!
(The camera pans over to Mr. Chatterbox, who is now engulfed in the now-large orange hat. Mr. Bowler is still in the frame. Mr. Chatterbox shakes around inside the hat)
Narrator: The hat grew down to his feet.
(The camera stops moving)
Narrator: And Mr. Chatterbox stopped talking. And, as soon as he stopped talking,
(The hat shrinks back down to Mr. Chatterbox's hands. His arms are also trapped in the hat)
Narrator: The hat grew smaller and smaller,
(The hat shrinks back down to Mr. Chatterbox's mouth)
Narrator: Until it,
(The hat shrinks back down to Mr. Chatterbox's shoulders)
Narrator: Was the same size as,
(The hat shrinks back down to Mr. Chatterbox's eyes)
Narrator: When he'd first tried,
(The hat shrinks some more)
Narrator: It on.
(The hat shrinks back down to its original size. Mr. Chatterbox is left dumbstruck as the camera pans over to Mr. Bowler)
Narrator: Mr. Bowler was delighted.
(The camera stops moving once Mr. Bowler is in the center of the frame and only Mr. Chatterbox's fingers on his right hand are visible)
Mr. Bowler: My special magic hat really works!
Narrator: He chuckled.
(The scene transitions to Mr. Chatterbox, wearing his new hat, going for a walk in the village. The camera starts to zoom out)
Narrator: The following day,
(The camera zooms out to reveal the postman standing in front of Mr. Chatterbox)
Narrator: Mr. Chatterbox was out for a walk when he met the postman in the village.
(The camera stops zooming out)
Mr. Chatterbox: Hello, Postman.
Narrator: He said.
Mr. Chatterbox: I say, do you like my new hat? Have you ever seen such a fine hat? I'm sure you have never, what a hat, and... (talking incoherently)
(Mr. Chatterbox's hat starts to grow)
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (talking incoherently)
Narrator (overlap): But you know what was happening!
(Mr. Chatterbox's hat continues to grow)
Mr. Chatterbox (overlap): (talking incoherently)
Narrator (overlap): Don't you?
(The hat grows over Mr. Chatterbox's eyes)
Narrator: The hat grew,
(The hat grows over Mr. Chatterbox's shoulders)
Narrator: And grew and grew,
(The hat grows over Mr. Chatterbox's mouth)
Narrator: The more Mr. Chatterbox,
(The hat grows down to Mr. Chatterbox's hands. His arms are also trapped in the hat)
Narrator: Talked
(The hat grows down to Mr. Chatterbox's feet)
Postman: (chuckles)
(Mr. Chatterbox shakes around inside the hat)
Postman: Now I...I know what Mr. Bowler meant by a magic hat!
(The camera zooms in closer to the postman and Mr. Chatterbox)
Narrator (while chuckling): (chuckled the postman)
(The postman starts walking out of the frame to the left. The camera pans to the left so Mr. Chatterbox is in the center of the frame)
Narrator: And he went on his way, leaving poor Mr. Chatterbox speechless.
(The postman exits the frame. The hat shrinks back down to Mr. Chatterbox's hands. His arms are also trapped in the hat)
Mr. Chatterbox: Hmmm
(The hat shrinks back down to Mr. Chatterbox's mouth)
Narrator: He thought. Thinking.
(The hat shrinks back down to Mr. Chatterbox's shoulders)
Narrator: Not talking,
(The hat shrinks back down to Mr. Chatterbox's eyes)
Narrator: Thinking.
(The hat shrinks some more)
Narrator: And do you know something?
(The hat shrinks back down to its original size)
Narrator: That hat,
(The background fades to a white background. Mr. Chatterbox is still in the center of the frame wearing his orange hat)
Narrator: Taught Mr. Chatterbox his lesson.
(The camera zooms out slightly so Mr. Chatterbox is fully in the frame)
Mr. Chatterbox: And these day, I don't talk half as much as I used to, or even a quarter as much, or even a half of a quarter and...in short, I talk less. (chuckles) And you know the reason for that, don't you? Yes, of course you do. But um...
(Mr. Chatterbox's hat starts growing at a fast rate)
Mr. Chatterbox: Keep it under your hat.
(The hat grows all the way to Mr. Chatterbox's feet. The episode ends here)
