Mr. Jelly's Frightful Day is a story from the 1980 Annual.
Plot[]
Mr. Jelly was scared of everything and anything: from a loud thunderstorm to a butterfly flapping their wings. This story is about Mr. Jelly's birthday. After waking up and cautiously making sure it was safe to get out of bed, a loud knocking was heard! Mr. Jelly was so terrified that he retreated under the bed. Luckily, it was only Mr. Impossible. But it was still enough of a surprise to make Mr. Jelly faint for a moment. Mr. Impossible came to take Mr. Jelly out for his birthday and even cooked him a special birthday breakfast!
After breakfast, Mr. Impossible took Mr. Jelly on a train ride to a mystery location. A train ride is fun, but to Mr. Jelly, the whistle is equivalent to the sounds of war! Mr. Impossible calmed his friend down and they soon arrived at their destination: Nonsenseland. Mr. Silly and Mr. Nonsense met up with Mr. Impossible and Mr. Jelly and wished the latter a "Happy Birthday" from Mr. Nonsense's rowboat bed. Mr. Nonsense and Mr. Silly even prepared Mr. Jelly a cake where the candles were sticking out sideways! Mr. Jelly was so frightened that he couldn't muster up the courage to blow out the candles. This led to Mr. Nonsense using a fire hose to put out the candles! Water soaked everything and, not surprisingly, Mr. Jelly thought it was a disastrous flood. Fortunately, the rest of the party was okay; they had tea and cake that was wet but still tasty.
Mr. Impossible then flew Mr. Jelly back home. Mr. Jelly closed his eyes tight and didn't open them until he was safely back in his home. It certainly was a birthday he wouldn't forget anytime soon.
