Mr. Jelly and the Scarecrow is a story from the 1981 Annual.
Plot[]
Mr. Jelly is afraid of anything and everything. But there are somedays where he is brave enough to go for a walk. One such instance, he decided to go for a short walk around the edge of the cornfield near his house. He hadn't gotten far when he saw a large crow flying down to the field for a lunch of corn. Mr. Jelly was terrified at the sight, believing the crow to be a giant dragon, and fainted.
Upon waking up, Mr. Jelly saw a sentient scarecrow. To Mr. Jelly, a scarecrow is more terrifying than one black crow. The scarecrow calmed Mr. Jelly down and told him something. While the scarecrow didn't have much luck scaring away birds, Mr. Jelly screaming and waving his arms around in fear resulted in the crow hightailing it as fast as it could! In other words, the crow was more scared of Mr. Jelly than Mr. Jelly was of the crow. Just then, Farmer Oats, who owned the cornfield, praised Mr. Jelly for his work and offered him a job helping the scarecrow scare the crows away. This made Mr. Jelly very brave as he was able to do the job very well. He even scared other birds. Including a baby sparrow that scared Mr. Jelly so much, he couldn't stop shaking for a whole week! Well done, Mr. Jelly!
