(The episode begins with a close-up of a daisy)
Narrator: Mr. Small,
(The camera zooms out to reveal a small house hidden underneath the daisy)
Narrator: Was very small.
Birds (offscreen): (chirping)
Narrator: He lived,
(The camera stops zooming out)
Narrator: In a small house, underneath a daisy at the bottom of Mr. Robinson's garden.
(The camera zooms in on Mr. Small's house)
Narrator: It was a very nice house, although very tiny, and it suited Mr. Small very well indeed.
(The camera moves towards one of the windows in Mr. Small's house)
Narrator: He liked living there.
(The scene transitions to Mr. Small asleep in bed)
Narrator: Now, this story is all about the time Mr. Small decided to get a job. The trouble was, what sort of job could Mr. Small do?
(The camera starts zooming in towards Mr. Small)
Narrator: After all, there aren't that many small jobs.
(The scene transitions to Mr. Small sitting at his kitchen table eating lunch)
Narrator: Mr. Small had thought about it for a long time. But,
(A blue thought balloon appears above Mr. Small but nothing is shown in the thought balloon)
Narrator: Hadn't had any ideas. Not one.
(The thought balloon shrinks away to nothingness and Mr. Small prepares to eat his lunch. The camera zooms out to show what's on Mr. Small's plate. On his plate are half a pea and a crumb that resembles mashed potatoes. Also on the table is a glass of lemonade)
Narrator: He was thinking about it right now. While he was having lunch.
(The camera stops zooming out)
Narrator: He was having,
(Mr. Small eats the half of a pea that's on his plate)
Narrator: Half a pea,
(Mr. Small eats the crumb that's on his plate)
Narrator: One crumb,
(Mr. Small drinks some of his lemonade)
Narrator: And a drop of lemonade.
(Mr. Small puts his glass down)
Narrator: (chuckles)
(Mr. Small looks up just as the blue thought balloon returns. Once again, nothing is shown in it)
Narrator: Mr. Small thought and thought while he was eating his big lunch, but it was no use.
(The thought balloon goes away)
Narrator: Thinking just made him thirsty.
(Mr. Small drinks some of his lemonade)
Narrator: So he had another drop of lemonade.
(Mr. Small puts his glass down)
Mr. Small: I know!
(Mr. Small looks up)
Narrator: He thought to himself.
(A blue thought balloon appears again. This time, with an old man wearing glasses in it)
Mr. Small: After lunch,
(The camera zooms in on the thought balloon)
Mr. Small (offscreen): I'll go and see Mr. Robinson and ask his advice.
(The scene cuts to Mr. Small leaving his house and walking down the garden path to the left of the screen)
Narrator: So after lunch, he left his house,
(Mr. Small walks out of the frame)
Narrator: And walked to Mr. Robinson's house at the top of the garden.
(Mr. Small is shown walking up the garden path. The path is shown on an incline and Mr. Small is shown walking to the top left of the screen, with the camera following him)
Narrator: It was quite a long walk for somebody as small as Mr. Small.
(The camera cuts to Mr. Small sitting on a pebble, catching his breath)
Narrator: And halfway there, he stopped for a rest.
(The camera zooms in towards Mr. Small as he breathes inaudibly fast)
Narrator: He sat on a pebble, feeling quite out of breath.
(Mr. Small stops breathing fast and crosses his legs. The camera stops zooming in. Walter the Worm crawls into the frame towards the left. Walter stops when he sees Mr. Small)
Narrator: A worm crawled by and stopped.
(The camera zooms in on Walter)
Walter: Good afternoon, Mr. Small.
Narrator: Said the worm.
(The camera cuts over to Mr. Small)
Mr. Small: Good afternoon, Walter.
Narrator: Said Mr. Small to the worm, whom he knew quite well.
(The camera zooms out to show Walter and Mr. Small in the same frame)
Walter: Out for a walk, are you?
Narrator: Asked Walter.
(Mr. Small points towards the left)
Mr. Small: Going to see Mr. Robinson.
Narrator: Replied Mr. Small.
(The camera zooms in on Walter and Mr. Small)
Walter: Oh.
Narrator: Said Walter the Worm.
(Walter the Worm crawls backwards out of the frame. MR. Small smiles as a way to say goodbye to his friend)
Narrator: And crawled off.
(The camera starts zooming out)
Narrator: Walter was a worm of very few words.
(The camera stops zooming out once the pebble is fully in the frame. The camera cuts to Mr. Small walking along the garden path to the left of the screen. The camera follows Mr. Small)
Narrator: After he rested for a while, Mr. Small set off again and walked all the rest of the way to Mr. Robinson's house.
(The camera stops moving)
Narrator: Without stopping once.
(Just as Mr. Small is about to walk out of the frame, the camera cuts over to Mr. Small standing at the bottom of a step in front of a door)
Narrator: When he got there,
(Mr. Small climbs up onto the step)
Narrator: He climbed up the steps to Mr. Robinson's back door.
(The camera zooms out slightly. Mr. Small knocks on the door)
Narrator: He knocked at the door. Nobody heard him.
(Mr. Small stops knocking)
Narrator: The trouble was, you see, that,
(Mr. Small knocks on the door again)
Narrator: If you're as small as Mr. Small,
(Mr. Small stops knocking)
Narrator: You don't have a very loud knock.
(The camera moves back down to Mr. Small as he looks up)
Narrator: Mr. Small looked up.
(The camera pans up to show the doorbell way out of Mr. Small's reach)
Narrator: There, high above his head, was a doorbell.
(The camera cuts back down to Mr. Small and zooms out from him)
Mr. Small: How can I ring the bell when I can't reach it?
(The camera stops zooming out)
Narrator: Thought Mr. Small to himself.
(The camera moves in closer to Mr. Small)
Narrator: Just then,
(The sound of footsteps are heard. Mr. Small leans to the left and (as he is facing the door) puts his right hand up to his ear to hear the footsteps)
Narrator: Mr. Small heard footsteps.
(Mr. Small puts his arm down and stops leaning over. The camera cuts up to a postman about to put a letter into the door's letter slot)
Narrator: It was the postman. The postman came to the door, posted his letters,
(The postman pushes the letters into the letter slot)
Narrator: And was just about to leave when he heard a voice.
Mr. Small (offscreen): Hello!
Narrator: Said the voice.
(The postman looks down)
Narrator: And the postman looked down.
Postman: Hello.
Narrator: He said to Mr. Small.
Postman: Who are you?
(The camera cuts back down to Mr. Small)
Mr. Small: I'm Mr. Small.
Narrator: Said Mr. Small.
(Mr. Small points up to the bell)
Mr. Small: Will you ring the bell for me?
(The camera cuts back to the postman)
Postman: Of course I will.
Narrator: Replied the postman in answer to Mr. Small's question.
(The postman reaches out to the doorbell)
Narrator: And reaching out,
(The postman rings the doorbell and a ding-dong is heard)
Narrator: He pressed the bell with his finger.
(The camera cuts back down to Mr. Small)
Mr. Small: Thank you.
Narrator: Said Mr. Small
(The camera cuts back to the postman)
Postman: My pleasure.
Narrator: Said the postman.
(The postman walks out of the frame to the right)
Narrator: And walked away.
(The camera cuts down to Mr. Small. The camera zooms out from Mr. Small. The sound of footsteps are heard)
Narrator: Mr. Small heard footsteps,
(The camera stops zooming out once the bottom half of the door is in the frame)
Narrator: Coming to the door.
(The door opens and a pair of legs wearing dark brown pants and brown shoes on the end of them appear in the doorway)
Narrator: The door opened.
(The camera cuts up to show Mr. Robinson looking around and holding the door open with his right hand)
Narrator: Mr. Robinson looked out.
(Mr. Robinson looks around but doesn't see anything)
Mr. Robinson: That's funny.
Narrator: He said.
(Mr. Robinson looks around some more)
Mr. Robinson: I was sure I heard somebody ring the bell.
Narrator: He was just about to shut the door when he heard a little voice.
(The camera zooms in towards Mr. Robinson as he continues to look around)
Mr. Small (offscreen): Hello!
Narrator: Said the voice.
Mr. Small (offscreen): Hello, Mr. Robinson!
(Mr. Robinson looks down)
Narrator: Mr. Robinson looked down and down.
Mr. Robinson: Hello
Narrator: He said.
Mr. Robinson: What are you doing here?
(The camera cuts down to Mr. Small)
Mr. Small: I've come to ask your advice.
Narrator: Said Mr. Small to Mr. Robinson.
(The camera cuts back up to Mr. Robinson)
Mr. Robinson: Well,
Narrator: Said Mr. Robinson.
Mr. Robinson: You'd better come in and have a talk
(The camera cuts down to Mr. Small and zooms in towards him)
Narrator: Mr. Small followed Mr. Robinson,
(The scene transitions to Mr. Small sitting on the arm of Mr. Robinson's chair and leaning on Mr. Robinson's hand. The camera zooms out to show Mr. Robinson sitting in the chair and looking at Mr. Small)
Narrator: Into the house. And perched on the arm of Mr. Robinson's favourite chair, he told him how he couldn't think of a job that he could do.
(The camera stops zooming out)
Narrator: Mr. Robinson sipped a cup of tea and listened.
(The camera zooms in on Mr. Small)
Mr. Small: So you see,
Narrator: Mr. Small explained.
Mr. Small: How difficult it is.
Mr. Robinson (offscreen): Yes.
(The camera cuts over to Mr. Robinson)
Mr. Robinson: Yes, I can see that.
Narrator: Said Mr. Robinson.
Mr. Robinson: But leave it to me.
(The scene cuts over to downtown. On one of the streets is a yellow building with red and blue awnings, a gray roof, and a red chimney)
Narrator: Mr. Robinson knew a lot of people.
(The camera zooms in towards the yellow building)
Narrator: Mr. Robinson knew somebody who at a restaurant and arranged for Mr. Small,
(The camera stops zooming in)
Narrator: To work there.
(The camera cuts to inside the restaurant where Mr. Small is shown standing on the rim of a mustard pot and holding a long spoon over it)
Narrator: Putting mustard into mustard pots. But,
(Mr. Small falls into the pot of mustard)
Narrator: Mr. Small kept,
(Mr. Small rises out from the mustard pot with his hat covered in mustard. The camera zooms in on the mustard-covered Mr. Small as he is shown in the mustard pot)
Narrator: Falling into the pots and getting covered in mustard. So he left that job.
(The camera stops zooming in. The camera cuts over to another shop. The building is shown to be orange with a red awning and roof)
Narrator: Mr. Robinson knew somebody,
(The camera zooms in towards the orange building)
Narrator: Who worked at a sweets shop and arranged for Mr. Small to work there.
(The camera stops zooming in)
Narrator: Serving sweets.
(The camera cuts to inside the sweets shop and zooms out from a jar of sweets)
Narrator: But,
(Mr. Small rises from inside the jar of sweets with an orange sweet on his head. The camera continues zooming out)
Narrator: Mr. Small kept falling into the sweet jars.
(The camera stops zooming out)
Narrator: So he left that job.
(The camera cuts to Mr. Small carrying a bunch of matches and walking towards the viewers)
Narrator: Mr. Robinson knew somebody who worked in a place where they made matches and arranged for Mr. Small to work there. Packing matches into boxes. But,
(The camera cuts over to a matchbox rustling from the inside)
Narrator: Mr. Small kept getting,
(The camera pans slightly to the left)
Narrator: Shut in,
(The box opens to reveal Mr. Small wedge in between the matches)
Narrator: The boxes with the matches.
(The camera zooms in on the Mr. Small as he is trapped between the matches in the matchbox)
Narrator: So he left that job.
(The camera stops zooming in and the scene cuts to a farm and its fields on a nice sunny day)
Narrator: Mr. Robinson,
(The camera zooms in towards the farm)
Narrator: Knew somebody who worked on a farm.
Pigs (offscreen and overlap): (snorting)
Chickens (offscreen and overlap): (clucking and crowing)
Narrator (overlap): And arranged for Mr. Small to work there.
(The scene cuts over to a bunch of white and brown eggs. The camera pans down and shows the white and brown eggs of different shades of colour)
Pigs (offscreen and overlap): (snorting)
Chickens (offscreen and overlap): (clucking and crowing)
Narrator (overlap): Sorting the brown eggs,
(As the camera continues panning down, Mr. Small is shown trapped between some of the eggs)
Pigs (offscreen and overlap): (snorting)
Chickens (offscreen and overlap): (clucking and crowing)
Narrator (overlap): From the white eggs. But,
(The camera starts zooming out)
Pigs (offscreen and overlap): (snorting)
Chickens (offscreen and overlap): (clucking and crowing)
Narrator (overlap): Mr. Small kept getting by the eggs. So,
(The camera stops zooming out)
Pigs (offscreen and overlap): (snorting)
Chickens (offscreen and overlap): (clucking and crowing)
Narrator (overlap): He left that job.
Pigs (offscreen and overlap): (snorting)
Chickens (offscreen and overlap): (clucking and crowing)
(The scene cuts to Mr. Robinson speaking to Mr. Small. Mr. Small is on the index finger of Mr. Robinson's right hand, which is raised up towards his eyes and nose)
Mr. Robinson: What are we going to do with you?
Narrator: Mr. Robinson asked Mr. Small one evening.
(The camera zooms in on Mr. Small)
Mr. Small: Don't know.
Narrator: Said Mr. Small in a small voice.
(The camera zooms back out)
Mr. Robinson: I've got one more idea.
Narrator: Said Mr. Robinson.
Mr. Robinson: I know somebody who writes stories for children. Perhaps you could work for him?
Narrator: So,
(The scene transitions to Mr. Small standing on the desk of Roger Hargreaves. On the desk, there is a jar of pencils and a sheet of paper)
Narrator: The following day, Mr. Robinson took Mr. Small to meet the man who wrote children's stories.
(The camera cuts down to Mr. Small as he talks to Roger)
Mr. Small: Can I work for you?
(The camera zooms out from Mr. Small)
Narrator: Mr. Small asked the man.
(The camera cuts over and zooms in towards Roger)
Roger: Yes, you can!
Narrator: Replied the man.
(The camera stops zooming in)
Roger: Pass me that pencil and tell me all about the jobs you've been doing. And then I'll write a story about it. E-I, I'll call it, "Mr. Small."
(Mr. Small is heard grabbing a pencil from the pencil jar offscreen. The camera cuts back down to the desk as Mr. Small inches onto the screen with the pencil. He walks into the frame towards the left)
Narrator: He added.
Mr. Small: The children won't want to,
(Mr. Small stops moving upon reaching the middle of the desk)
Mr. Small: Hear a story all about me.
Narrator: Explained Mr. Small.
(The camera cuts back over to Roger. Mr. Small is shown standing on the desk holding the pencil as well)
Roger: Yes, they will.
Narrator: Replied the man.
Roger: They'll like it very much
(The camera cuts back down to Mr. Small and zooms in towards him as he holds the pencil up in his left hand)
Narrator: And you did!
(The camera stops zooming in and Mr. Small nods his head)
Narrator: Didn't you?
